To start breeding Lucas terriers you must either have a Lucas Terrier Club registered Lucas terrier, a Kennel Club registered Norfolk or Kennel Club registered Sealyham.
The dog you breed to must also be either a Lucas Terrier Club registered Lucas terrier, a Kennel Club registered Norfolk or Kennel Club registered Sealyham.
All three of the above breeds have small gene pools and it is, therefore, strongly recommended that you contact Pamela Harrow on 01659 74444 or at cattledogs@btinternet.com to check that your bitch and the dog you are considering are not too closely related. Pamela can recommend a number of dogs for you to choose from.
Before breeding you should have your bitch x-rayed to ensure that she is clear of IVDD - if she has four or more areas of calcification then it is recommended that she is not bred from because the strain on her back when carrying puppies may cause herniation. It is also preferable that the dog you use, if it is a Lucas terrier, has also been x-rayed and is clear of IVDD. A copy of the IVDD questionnaire to be completed by your Vet is available from this website - go here
When you meet with the dog owner you should take a copy of the Puppy Registration form as the dog owner must sign to confirm that a mating has taken place. If you don't have a form then contact Cathy Thomas on 01239 682262 or e-mail cathythomas@winds3.wanadoo.co.uk and she will get one to you.
When your puppies are born you should complete the Puppy Registration form, including new owner details, and send it to Cathy Thomas. In turn you will be provided with a Registration Certificate for each puppy which should be passed to the new owner. This is proof that the puppy is a bona fide Lucas terrier with a Lucas Terrier Club registration number.
If you require a pedigree you should contact Pamela Harrow and she will provide one.
If your dog is not registered with the Lucas Terrier Club you will not be able to mate it to a registered Lucas terrier, any progeny will not be eligible for registration and you will not be able to show your dog at the annual Lucas Terrier Club show.
