Lucas Terrier Club Show
3rd October 1999
Judge: Joy Taylor (Nanfan)
I enjoyed the day very much, and must thank my stewards for helping to make it such a happy day for me, to the exhibitors for bringing their dogs under me and for the sporting way they accepted my decisions.
The terrriers were more even in type than I had expected, but a few were on the leg and logner cast than is allowed in the standard, which asks for a sturdy, symmetrically built terrier, a compact working dog. The longer cast and length of leg would be useful if the terrier ran with hounds, but would detract from its strength as an earth dog. Possibly the breeders should decide on the requirements of the breed before too long. The bites were excellent, only one incorrect mouth, the rest had strong, even teeth with very little curve on the lower jaw.
Minor Puppy Dog
1 Rodwell's George. Full coloured dog, in puppy coat at present but has the makings of a harsh coat. Nice topline and sound both ways. RESERVE BEST PUPPY
2 Dettmers Salty. Attractive 13 week baby, nicely coloured, still with milk teeth so not possible to access dentition, not yet entire, top line was spoilt by an overly gay tail.
3 Rodwell's JR. Nice overall terrier, soft coated as yet, attractive badger markings on head, topline not yet true, longer in hock than the two above which tended to spoil his hind action.
Junior Dog
1 Rodwell's Maxim. Good working type with digging front. Full coloured, softish coat.
2 Frost's Boris Sir Archie. Close up, very sound, likes his dinner! Better coat than 1 but hind action spoilt by weight.
3 Peto's Tigger. An almost black dog. Texture of coat not typical, nice head but a little overawed by his surroundings.
Novice Dog
1 Frost's Lostmelicence Samson. A very sound dog, well constructed and sound right through. Short coupled, lovely head and earset with dark, mean eye, correct for all terrier breeds. I really liked this dog but to be critical would have liked more colour on him. In spite of this could n ot be denied and must have much to give the breed. BEST IN SHOW
2 Thomas' The Tank Engine. ANother nice one, short coupled black and tan in good coat. Lovely topline, excels in head.
3 Frost's Joker. Full coloured dog, softish coat, spoilt his chances by his over enthusiasm and difficult to assess movement
4 Thomas' A Stitch In Time
Open Dog
1 Colville's Monte. Two verynice dogs in this class. Compact, good spring of rib, excels in topline and set on. Good turn of stifle and sound both ways. RESERVE BEST DOG
2 Frost's Tippytoes. Close up and unlucky to meet this one above. A compact dog but moving closer behind than 1. A little loose over the shoulder and a fraction low set.
Minor Puppy Bitch
1 Sippings Lady. A rough coated nicely marked puppy with correct tan markings. Good turn of stifle as yet not dropped on her hocks, with maturity she should have lots to offer. BEST PUPPY
2 Shepherd-Cross' Jigsaw. A very nice puppy at first glance but had a fault I could not overlook. An enchanting personality with a mind of her won.
Junior Bitch
1 Frost's Tango Bolero. Nicely coupled bitch with room behind the rib, nice head, sound both ways. Well put down and presented. RESERVE BEST BITCH
2 Frost's Cathy's Clown. Full coloured substantial bitch. Harsh coat, very sound, nice head and toplien
3 Thomas' Daisychain. Lighter bitch all through, soundly constructed, coat not typical in either colour or texture and would have liked more positive pigmentation.
Novice Bitch
1 Frost's Gertrude Lawrence. Aptly named! A beautiful bitch, nice topline and soundly constructed. Short coupled but plenty behind her ribcage. Nice turn of stifle, sound both ways. BEST BITCH. RESERVE BEST IN SHOW
2 Whitehead's Edie. A really rough coat, but nicely marked. Rather reluctant on the move.
3 Kenyon's Poppy. A bitch of great character. A good digging front, not a good topline and tail low set but enjoyed her day out.
Open Bitch
1 Thomas' Coffee Bean. A harsh coated bitch with a very nice head, good topline, short coupled and a good turn of stifle. Full coloured.
2 Frost's Szasza. Larger type, softish furnishings but topcoat harsh enough; could be stronger coloured. A nice bitch nevertheless.
3 Frost's Jemima. A nicely constructed bitch but front let her down, a useful bitch, coat on the soft side.
4 Dettmer's Pebble
Veteran Bitch
1 Irwin's Flossie. A ncie substantial bitch, well muscled, strong right through. A useful sort, head perhaps a little overdone.
2 Whitehead's Muffin. A compact bitch, sound overall type but a little reluctant to make the most of herself.
3 Smeaton's Moppet. A very portly lady who was not enjoying her day but a beautifully marked bitch.
It was a great pleasure to see these three and they well deserved the applause when they did a lap of honour round the ring
